2018 Content Writing for SEO

Ok – so we all know that content on websites should be unique and engaging content that appeals to the user AND Google. We also know that that is really hard to do sometimes because we want to make sure that we’re getting ALL THE KEYWORDS into the content AND sometimes we’re working with little to no content for a client. So here are some tips, tricks and examples on how to write unique and engaging content for 2018.

We are also working on creating a content library for the industries and you are free to use that content however you would like - just remember that if you are using it on a website you do need to adjust the wording and re-spin it to match the client.

Basics - What is SEO?

SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines. SEO isn't just about building search engine-friendly websites. It's about making your site better for people too.

Basic Principles

  • Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.
  • Don't deceive your users.
  • Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you, or to a Google employee. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
  • Think about what makes your website unique, valuable, or engaging. Make your website stand out from others in your field.

Best Practices

Meta

Title Tags – Make sure that all pages have a relevant title tag – Titles should be no more than 70 characters

Ex:  Biff Baker Fence Co Inc | Tucson AZ Fencing Contractor

Formula: COMPANY NAME | Location Service

Meta Descriptions:  Originally these used to be limited to 160 characters but after doing some research I’ve learned that they’ve updated it to be ~300 characters (holy crap! – source: https://moz.com/blog/how-long-should-your-meta-description-be-2018 ). For Meta descriptions we want to follow a similar rule of thumb as the title tag, company name, service area, relevance to the page, and maybe a service or two.

EX: We are your premier Virginia insurance agents offering personal insurance such as auto, renters & homeowners in Richmond, Yorktown, N Chesterfield VA. Call 757-877-5585 today to learn more!

Formula: the above description includes the State, Cities, types of insurances AND the phone number – everything you need at a glance.

Images

Image names should be descriptive – things such as metalroof.jpg, companyceo.jpg, computerscreens.jpg – not image1.jpg, image2.jpg, image3.jpg

Alt tags should be descriptive and NOT keyword stuffed

Good alt tag: House Referencing Window Replacements and Installations

Bad alt tag: Windows

REALLY bad alt tag: Windows ohio windows window installations window repairs window repair ohio

A Note on Alt Tags on Images

Google now wants image alt tags to be more specific to what’s being shown in the image as well as what text on the page correlates with it. For reference here is a link to the web page holding these images: http://www.contractingbysweazey.com/home/

Sweazey Revised Alt Tags:

  • Header With the Company Logo and Slogan “Old Fashioned Quality”
  • House Referencing Window Replacements and Installations
  • New Shingle Roofing and Red Siding
  • Granite Countertops With Wooden Cabinets
  • Renovating Historic Brick Structure
  • Beginnings of a Home Addition
  • New Stained Deck With White Railings
  • Map Button Linking Business Location
  • General Contracting by Sweazey BBB Business Review
  • Company Logo for Special Offer
  • Yellow Page City Logo

Content

Content should be full of relevant keywords but not keyword stuffed, easy and pleasant to read, user friendly, AND answer key questions about the company and services.  Heading tags (H1, H2, H3 etc) should feature a service area and a keyword in a way that makes sense.

Example – Not the greatest content – note how many times the service area is mentioned! That just makes for a poor user experience because it’s awkward to read.

Here is that entire page rewritten – Note the best thing that page had was the bullet points – bullet points are a great way to get a lot of information across in an easy to digest way.

2018 Trends

Voice Assistance & Voice Search

I’ve seen this over and over again – Voice search and voice assistance is going to be huge – why? User experience –  “Voice-activated speaker owners told us that talking to their virtual assistant—rather than having to type—helps them get things done quickly and efficiently.” (https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/consumer-insights/voice-assistance-consumer-experience/?_ga=2.189408939.1287873488.1517428331-2012478002.1517428331 )

Objective: More research on how to properly SEO our websites to be found with Voice

Mobile

Mobile is ALWAYS relevant – but Google IS working on making the switch to favoring  mobile over desktop in search results.

Objective: Learn more about AMPs (Accelerated Mobile Apps) and how that can help our websites

Local and LOCAL

This ties in with mobile – but Google is going to be looking for VERY local (like down to the block, local) results to feed its users. So we want to make sure that are clients can be easily found for their actual location as well as their service area.

Objective: Educate our clients that being found locally isn’t necessarily a bad thing
